Hawke’s Bay is an exciting wine region, located on the east coast side of the north island. The name of the region has received from the bay outside the country, called Hawke Bay. Wine vying for second place among New Zealand’s Marlborough district after. Hawke’s Bay is a warmer districts than Marlborough and thus has different styles of wine. The principal town of the area is Napier is a nice holiday resort, famous for its center in the Art Deco style.

Moana Park is located about 5 km from Napier in the western hills of Hawke’s Bay. The winery is owned by the Barker family and the whole family is involved in the production. Dan Barker is the winemaker. The family has a passionate relationship to winemaking and every step of production is meticulous and careful with a combination of tradition and modern methods.

The winery produces serious wines still are easy to grasp, thanks to its fruity style. It has wineries in different areas of the district, especially in the Gimblett gravels and Dartmoor Valley. Gimblett gravels have a very good reputation around the world for its excellent conditions for producing wines of Bordeaux type. But in Hawke’s Bay also produced world class wines of Shiraz, Viogner and others.

An important guiding principle for Moana Park is to produce natural wines. Natural wines are created with as little use of chemicals as possible in the production. This applies both in the vineyard where the grapes are grown following organic principles and the actual wine making. Production is also completely free of animal products. The philosophy is “less is more” when it comes additives. This gives wines where the grapes plant location, soil and climatic conditions etc. is naturally integrated all the way to the bottle and give new dimensions in taste perception. A side effect is that sensitive and allergic people often manage to consume these wines better than others such as been heavily sprayed with chemicals.

Apart from other obvious benefits these principles also leads to high quality products proven not least by that Moana Park is New Zealand’s most awarded Boutique winery. The finest award they have received so far was when their Moana Park Viogner was named the world’s best-Viogner wine at Decanter Awards 2010 (one of the most prestigious competitions in the world with contributions from 44 countries and over 12,000 wines).
